Betrayal and lies are considered by most to be a terrible offense. To depict these acts of deceit, this project centers around two stories: the apologetic speech, “I Have Sinned” delivered by former President Bill Clinton, and the famous story of betrayal presented in William Shakespeare’s play Julius Caesar. While “I Have Sinned” addresses the scandalous affair between Bill Clinton and Monica Lewinsky, Shakespeare’s Julius Caesar examines the theme of betrayal.
To illustrate the overarching themes of deceit and betrayal, various typographic treatments were used. By giving call-outs to specific words, the book communicates a sense of tension and confusion. The texts of both works are staggered on top of one another, visually representing the idea of lies piled on top of lies. For color, black is used to convey dark emotions, while red is used to symbolize passion. By utilizing these type and design treatments, this project conveys a mood of dishonesty and betrayal.
